When Animals Attack ! ! Hornets Maul Bruins ! !

The Battle of Boston began this morning as the Pittsburgh Hornets attacked the Boston Junior Bruins early on, scoring 3 of their first 4 goals on power plays, to earn a decisive 7-3 victory in opening round action of the Beantown Classic. The ferocious Bruins started the game off fast for the first few minutes, dominating play with their aggressive behavior and trying to dominate the Hornets into an early submission. Like the fiery insect that bears its name though, the Hornets moved fast and quick to withstand the intial Bruin flurry behind the solid goaltending of Pittsburgh Hornet Goaltender Ben Burns, then like a wounded animanl came out of the corner attacking the Bruins hard, stinging and flying all over the ice to move out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Hornets were buzzing all over the offensive zone with perhaps their best implementation of down-low cycling all year and wearing down the beast of Boston like a skilled matador does to a weary bull in the bullfighting ring. The Bruins, still smarting from these multiple Hornet scores, tried to change their luck by changing goalies in the second half, but by then the fatal damage had already been done, as both teams traded 3 goals each to round out a final 7-3 victory for the Pittsburgh Hornets. Mark Polidor and Pat Gaul led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist each, with additional Bruin-beating goals added by Chris Cerutti, Jeff Hannan and Ronnie Kramer as well. Furman South captued the “ Prince of Assists” title with 3 assists while Matt Celene and Andrew Blazeck each added 2 assists with a final assist chalked up by Brian McGinty.

Besting the beast of Boston is one thing, surving the challenge of cold, hard steel is another as the Pittsburgh Hornets face the Shattuck-St.Mary’s Sabres in continued tournament action later this evening.

Mayotte earns 2nd Goalie of the Week Honors

Former Hornet and Union College Senior Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) was awarded his second ECACHL Goalie of the Week honor for the week ending November 12 after backstopping Union to a pair of ECACHL home victories. The first was a 6-2 win over Princeton for the first league win of the season and was followed up with a 2-0 win over then No. 20 ranked Quinnipiac. It was the fifth career win against the Tigers and first time Mayotte has faced the Bobcats. He combined for 56 saves and allowed just two goals for a 1.00 goals against average and a .966 save percentage. Congratulations Kris for working so hard as a youngster at this sport and developing into one of the top college goaltenders in the country.

Alumni update November 14, 2005

  • Over the weekend in the NCAA, former Hornet Christian Hanson scored a goal for Notre Dame as the Irish defeated Bowling Green 9-4; and Denis Kirstein an assist for Mercyhurst as Holy Cross defeated the Lakers 10-3.
  • Lou Garritan scored a goal as Bemidji State defeated Wayne State 4-1, Bemidji ended the weekend by sweeping Wayne State 3-1.
  • Grant Lewis had a pair of assists as Dartmouth lost to Colgate 3-2, but defeated Cornell 6-1, and Kris Mayotte had 26 saves as Union defeated Princeton 6-2. Mayotte then stopped 29 shots on Saturday night to shutout Quinnipiac 2-0.
  • It turned out to be a good weekend for the DI Robert Morris Colonials, and especially for Sean Berkstresser. The former Pittsburgh Hornet scored a pair of goals and added an assist yesterday to help the Colonials to a 4-2 win over RIT at Island Sports. Berkstresser was instrumental in Saturday night's game, as he and former Hornet, Jace Buzek scored third period goals to help the Colonials come from behind and gain a 5-5 tie with RIT.
  • Ohio and Penn State settled for a split of their big weekend series, with the Bobcats winning 1-0 on a goal by former Hornet Clay Labrosse on a feed from another former Hornet, David Fitzgerald, Actually, if luck had fallen the Icers' way they would have tallied a power-play goal, and perhaps a win. Midway through the third period, former Hornet, Justin DePretis snapped a laser high and beat Baksh for a 1-0 lead. However, the goal was waved off because the linesman saw the net was knocked off. The goal was erased and Ohio scored the game-winner with just more than three minutes remaining in the game.
    The Icers won the second game 5-4: former Hornet Lukas DeLorenzo had a pair of goals for the Icers;
  • Yesterday's game was somewhat of a homecoming in professional hockey for former Hornet JB Bittner, who as a rookie, leads the Chiefs in scoring with a pair of goals and five assists for seven points. It was also a Hornet day in Wheeling with Bittner on the Johnstown roster, and former Hornets Bill Downey and Cliff Loya on the roster for Wheeling. The Nailers signed Downey over the weekend.

Hail to the King - Team Illinois Reigns Supreme !

Wow, what an unbelievable ending to a fabulous tournament. Team Illinois, the mighty juggernaut of hockey from the Midwest , outlasted the heroic exploits of a determined band of Hornets to clinch a 1-0 tournament championship victory in a game that will be long remembered by all of the players and spectators as one of the best games ever played on RMU Ice. You could cut the tension in the air with a knife before the game as both teams realized I think what a mighty clash of powers this game was going to be.

The action was fast and furious at the drop of the puck and continued on that way for the rest of the game. Team Illinois proved why they are the top team in the country right now as they fired 31 shots on Rob Madore from almost every conceivable angle, missing the net only 5 times with their shots. Madore was up to the challenge though, as he showed more energy, speed and quickness than "a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" either snagging or deflecting most every type of scoring opportunity launched by TI. Robbie blended his incredible speed and quickness with strong angle play and a steady, confident mental demeanor to stand tall in the net and thwart TI throughout the onslaught.

The Hornets though made a statement that they too are a legitimate contender for the national championship this year as they were clearly fired up and fed off of the play and leadership of Robbie, firing 17 very good shots on Beau Christian in goal for TI who played strong as well and demonstrated why he is such a solid anchor for the hockey juggernaut known as TI. Though the excited and agressive Hornets missed the net with shots 11 times and hit a post and a cross bar, TI also had their share of "close but no cigar" moments as they hit the post 2x and the cross bar once as well. Through their hard work and determination that have made them a role model for other MWEHL teams, TI finally cracked the Hornet armor on a goal scored midway through the first half by Rick Carden of TI on a nice assist by Cory George.

This thin one-goal lead proved to be the margin of victory as the Hornets and TI battled through another epic, yet scoreless half. As the game wound down, the tension mounted, people were on their feet screaming, and the Hornets pushed it to the limit and put the pressure on, but TI stood strong and firm in their determination, and wound up with an exciting, memorable victory and tournament championship, extending their record to mind-numbing 31-0. Outstanding!! Congratulations are in order to TI Head coach Jim Marchi (top shelf and classy guy all the way), assistant coach Phil Doyle, the TI players and the entire TI Program (with a reputation for hockey excellence and class, a reputation that was enhanced even more by their play this weekend) for a well played final and a well earned victory.

The level of play throughout the tournament was tremendous and though it was tough to see every kid play every game, we did get to see some fine performances that we thought were worthy of mentioning, and sharing our congratulations to :

  • Justin Florek (90 Birth already committed to Northern Mich.)
  • AJ Jenks (90 birth year already committed to Michigan)
  • Steven West (90 rumored to being recruited by Ohio State)
  • James Gallagher Marquette
  • Scott Pulak
  • Alan Hokum G from Marquette
  • Anthony Schooley (89 commited to Mich tech)
  • Brian O'Neill Philadelphia
  • Joel Lundstrom Pikes Peak
  • John Ryder Pikes Peak
  • Ryan Craig Tri City
  • Domenic Morrone Philadelphia
  • John Williams Philadelphia
  • Derrick Kohles (Russell Stover)
