Grant Lewis - Candidate for the Hobey Baker Award

The Pittsburgh Hornets are proud to announce that former Hornet Grant Lewis, defenseman at Dartmouth University, has made the preliminary nomination list for the Hobey Baker Award. !! Hobey Baker was a legendary hockey player around the time of WWI. Consider that Hobey Baker captained Princeton's hockey and football teams, he was a charter member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and one of a handful of Americans to be inducted into Canada's Hockey Hall of Fame and he is a member of Princeton's Hall of Fame, both football and hockey. Each year the best hockey player in the country receives the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Recipients of the prestigious Hobey Baker award are selected based upon the following criteria:

  • Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice.
  • Candidates must contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game.
  • Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
  • Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules: be full time students in an accredited NCAA or NAIA college or university; and complete 50% or more of the season.

Process

Every head hockey coach at an accredited Division I NCAA school receives one ballot. Coaches are asked to pick the top three players in their league and the top three players in the nation (two separate rankings, three players each; a player may be listed in both places, and a coach can vote for his own player).

Coaches from 58 schools receive a ballot. Those ballots, along with Vote for Hobey's Preliminary Voting results, are tabulated by an accounting firm to determining the 10 finalists.

This top ten advances to the Selection Committee, which decides the eventual winner from the top ten. This committee is composed of print media, electronic media, NHL scouts, and the American Hockey Coaches Association (college hockey coaches). Its members are spread out among the hockey-playing section of the United States. The committee also includes an individual from USA Hockey.

The most interesting thing about this process is that the Hobey Baker committee collects votes from individual fans for players on the Preliminary Voting List. There are 193 players currently listed, and Grant is now #22. We would encourage everyone to go to the Dartmouth Website and check out the fine season Grant is currently having, then go to the Hobey Baker website, register, and cast your vote for Grant!

The rules provide you can vote everyday! We believe based upon Grant's season at Dartmouth, his known leadership qualities, and perhaps most importantly his character and integrity, that Grant is a strong candidate for Hobey Baker consideration. We would encourage everyone to take the time and cast a vote(s) for Grant as the recipient of the Hobey Baker award. He is a deserving candidate.

Congratulations Grant on your success so far. Even being mentioned in the same breath as Hobey Baker is a tremendous accomplishment. Like other of our Hornet alumni, you have done the Pittsburgh Hornets organization proud, and we wish you the best of luck in the Hobey Baker balloting. Go Hornets and Go Grant !!!
